Medicine Lodge

Merging steam purification, sweat lodge, and plant medicine healing

I participated in a Half-Moon Ceremony, which I can only describe as being amazing! It is difficult to put into words what this experience is like, but ritual, community, song, plant medicine, and reverence for Great Mystery all add up to tremendous healing power. Through this community, I’ve been able to dig down into my shadow self, confront a lot of buried trauma, and begin the integration of Soul Healing. I would highly recommend this type of communal experience to anyone seeking Spiritual Growth.

You are warmly invited back to the womb of the mother in our Medicine Lodge Ceremony. Here we will partake of our sacred plant medicine. We work with specific medicines when we hear the call to do so. This is an opportunity to do some deep healing work while communing with the Spirits of all realms.

Partaking of our plant medicine relative prior to entering the lodge, participants commune one at a time in a prayerful manner. We then pass the medicine again while we are in between rounds. In our tradition, individuals crawl to the left (ladies first) and clockwise to their spots. Hot lava rocks are heated outside of the lodge on a fire. They are then carried into a cloth covered willow frame hut to be placed into a pit. After the door is shut the inside of the lodge is pitch black with the exception of the red stones. Water is poured upon the sacred stones which creates steam that cleanses us on a deep level. Read more about Sweat Lodge.

After calling the spirits, setting forth prayers, and communing with the energies present, we exit the lodge. Many times we change into dry clothing to then sit around the fire of creation in comfort or we may go indoors depending on weather.

We put our attention on the flames and coals as in traditional ceremonies. We may receive messages during this time. More songs may be shared as well as uplifting words and teachings. Within the bounds of our home/yard Temple Space we journey from midday to evening. We may share a light, healthy potluck feast. Those needing to stay longer may do so or can plan to have a ride to pick them up.

There is the possibility of feeling a range of feelings and sensations through the Medicine Lodge experience. Tears may flow, indigestion, body aches, etc… all of these may occur. Everyone has a uniquely different reaction. If a participant feels nauseous, it is completely normal. Biodegradable bags are handed out to be placed behind and used as needed. If someone needs to purge or “get well” then the bag and its contents are ceremoniously dropped into an earthen hole dug specific for each ceremony.

Chants are sung to honor the plant medicine spirit that is present and many times we share spiritual songs from different traditions. For many of us, our flesh is the outcome of ancestral blending so it seems fitting to honor those who went before us through songs that call upon our helpers. Sometimes we sing melodies from our childhood or those that were dear to our heart from the spiritual tradition we were raised with.

Magickal Medicine

Because many of the teachings from earth based plant medicine traditions have not been preserved, the canvas is open for us to create a format that resonates. We allow the ancestors and relatives from the other realms guide us. How do we feel in our heart to pray, offer, connect? What do the details look and sound like? These are exciting times indeed to reignite the magickal realms of our inner and outer worlds.

Grandfather Medicine

When we partake of Grandfather Medicine, many times we tie up the water drum, shake the gourd rattle, and sing sacred chants from Half Moon Ceremonies (Native American Church). Spirits recognize our sacred objects, songs and those who are present. They are better able to assist from the other side to ultimately make much needed prayers manifest.

As always, we’ll need to work together to make sure we have all the wood needed, lodge covered, foods we like, etc…. One or two helpers will be needed for this ceremony to take place. Let me know if you want to hold a much appreciated position for the group. We’ll make sure you’re taken care of real well.

We look forward to sharing this special ceremony with you.
